Yocto Blacksail (6.1) was released on October 21, 2026, following Wrynose (6.0). BayLibre authored 107 commits this cycle, most of them in meta-riscv, which added its first SpacemiT K3 machines and consolidated its kernel and boot recipes. Trevor Gamblin wrote 103 of them, with two each from Hiago De Franco and Eilís Ní Fhlannagáin.
meta-riscv
A vendor RISC-V board is usable in Yocto only once its boot chain — firmware, a vendor kernel, a partition layout — is expressed as recipes. Trevor Gamblin co-developed that with SpacemiT for the Sipeed K3 Pico-ITX and added the CoM260 variant himself.
SpacemiT K3 board support
k3-pico-itx and k3-com260 both build to a wic image carrying FSBL, esos, OpenSBI, U-Boot and a vendor 6.18 Linux. The vendor kernel, U-Boot and OpenSBI recipes originate with SpacemiT’s Yingjie Liu, with Trevor as co-developer; the integration layer around them — the shared k3-vendor.inc include, kas configurations, registry entries, documentation — is Trevor’s.
The image class Trevor co-developed reproduces the vendor reference layout: a boot filesystem holding kernel, initramfs and DTBs, and a bootinfo block injected at offset 1M of the wic. U-Boot 2022.10’s ext4 driver cannot mount filesystems using newer orphan-file or checksum-seed features, so the class disables both.
Kernel and boot recipe consolidation
Trevor Gamblin replaced three per-board kernel recipes with one linux-mainline.bb, defaulting to the master branch and kernel 7.2 for every mainline meta-riscv machine.
The milkv-duo defconfig enabled ext4 only through CONFIG_EXT3_FS, which 7.2 removed, so after the move the board panicked with No filesystem could mount root. Trevor replaced the option with CONFIG_EXT4_FS.
One SPL recipe now serves both SoC families. OpenSSL 4.0.1 dropped the ENGINE API, which broke that recipe and three other U-Boot and kernel recipes. Trevor fixed all four with backported patches from the U-Boot mailing list and the 6.6.y stable kernel.
BSP tooling, CI and deprecations
A pull request that adds a MACHINE without a matching kas config or bitbake-registry entry now fails CI, checked by tools/validate-bsp-coverage.py and the GitHub workflow that runs it. Trevor added kas configurations for five boards and refreshed the bitbake-setup templates and PR checklist.
Seven vendor-fork machines, most unmaintained by their vendors for years, warn at build time under Trevor’s 6.1 deprecation list; the mainline-based eswin-ebc77-mainline stays.
openembedded-core
openembedded-core supplies the recipes every layer inherits, so a wrong option there reaches hardware its author never booted. Machines declaring TPM support in MACHINE_FEATURES built OVMF without TPM2 support for more than four years: the recipe passed a macro edk2 renamed to TPM2_ENABLE in stable202202. Eilís Ní Fhlannagáin fixed it.
Python packaging and ptest
setuptools-scm 10.x extracted its versioning into a standalone module and now depends on it, so Trevor Gamblin added a python3-vcs-versioning recipe. urllib3 2.6.3 capped setuptools-scm below 10, so he backported the upstream change that lifts the cap.
Trevor replaced Python’s 13 ptest skip patches, which broke whenever upstream moved a test module, with grouped SKIPPED_TESTS entries in the recipe. He also changed libpng’s ptest output to stream results as they run, so an intermittent qemuriscv64 timeout shows which test hung.
patchtest, qemu and other fixes
TCG flushed the whole TLB regardless of address or ASID, which made coreutils 9.11’s ptest on qemuriscv64 take 1049s. Trevor backported the RISC-V TLB patches from qemu-devel, which upstream measured bringing that run to 646s with unchanged results. He also backported an upstream OpenSBI fix for an extension check that misfired on Yocto build paths, to oe-core and to meta-riscv’s vendor forks.
patchtest now fails early when meta-selftest is missing from the layer list, and CTRL+C during a --directory run aborts the whole run rather than skipping to the next patch. The rest of Trevor Gamblin’s patchtest commits are internal refactoring.
Hiago De Franco fixed two smaller defects. Recipes inheriting nospdx kept the SBOM task create-spdx-3.0 adds and failed on the missing SPDX document whenever it ran, as it does under the SBOM CVE check or when invoked directly. The kernel CVE report also overwrote a vendor’s CVE_STATUS of backported-patch to Unpatched.
meta-openembedded and meta-updater
meta-openembedded carries the recipes openembedded-core does not, and its bitbake-setup templates are how a developer builds a single layer.
Trevor Gamblin added bitbake-registry configurations for ten meta-openembedded layers under both nodistro and poky on master — 20 loadable templates, so bitbake-setup init works against any of those layers.
The python3-glances recipe Eilís Ní Fhlannagáin wrote with Trevor brings a system monitor with a local TUI and web mode; Trevor also added its ptest and packagegroup entry.
A composefs PACKAGECONFIG lets an ostree system mount composefs overlays at boot, and Ed25519 support signs its commits. Hiago De Franco co-authored the change, a port by Ricardo Salveti of Qualcomm from Toradex’s meta-toradex-torizon integration.
